Medaglioni Palazzina di Stupinigi
2011 – Medallions of Savoia Genealogy

The 12 medallions hosted by the Palazzina di Caccia (the hunting palace), belong to the Ordine Mauriziano. The medallions were carved on a wooden base and painted to simulate bronze, then the relief figures of the first Savoia Counts were applied and enriched with decorations such as garlands, cartouches and beaded frames.

The medallions feature the following figures:

  • Beroldo, son of Ugone of Saxony (980-1027);
  • Umberto I, son of Beroldo (998-1048);
  • Amedeo I, son of Umberto I (1016-1049);
  • Oddone, son of Umberto I (undated);
  • Amedeo II (died 1095);
  • Umberto II (1048-1103);
  • Amedeo III, son of Umberto II (1080-1149);
  • Umberto III, Son of Amedeo III (1136-1188);
  • Tommaso I, son of Umberto III (1177-1223);
  • Amedeo IV, son of Tommaso I (1197-1253);
  • Bonifacio, son of Amedeo III (1244-1263)
  • Pietro, son of Tommaso (1203-1268).

The restoration works started in spring 2009 and were completed end 2010.
The medallions first underwent fixing to preserve their original colour finishing, then the missing portions were rebuilt; finally the restored medallions were cleaned and a suitable protection coating applied.
The restored medallions have been exhibited at the Palazzina di Caccia,which has been reopened to the public in Autumn 2011.
